Inhalt | 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook's first voyage aboard the 'Endeavour' to Australia and the Pacific. But as Australia's Indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt points out: "Cook's visit in 1770 is not viewed by all Australians in the same way. For some, it represents a unique and important scientific journey of discovery and, for some, the legacy of the voyage symbolises loss of country, language and culture. It is important that messages reflect both perspectives - the view from the ship and the view from the shore." In this research seminar, we will explore both views of the Australian cross-cultural encounter and what Maria Nugent has called "the messy history of settlement" especially through the study of recent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literature, theatre and art and a focus on the so-called Australian 'history wars', indigeneity, land rights, landscape, memory and nationality. |
Lernziele | This seminar acquaints students with the diversity of Australian literature and its multifaceted engagement with Indigenous and non-Indigenous interactions. |
Literatur | Students should acquire the following texts: Kate Grenville, "The Secret River" (Canongate Books, 2018) and Kim Scott, "Taboo" (Small Beer Press, 2019). Copies of Grenville and Scott will be available at the 'Labyrinth' bookstore, Nadelberg 17, Basel. Theoretical and additional primary texts will be made available on ADAM. |
