| Inhalt | This compact seminar will explore the history, theory, and practice of “progressive education.” The course will first explore how the European Enlightenment and Romanticism generated new ideas about the nature of the child and schooling by the early 19th century. We will consider, for example, the influence of J.J. Rousseau, Johann Pestalozzi, and Friedrich Froebel, and conservative resistance to their child-centered ideals. The seminar will then explore how progressive norms shaped a variety of schools and school practices in Europe and America in the 19th and 20th century, and how the rise of standardized testing threatened child-centered education. |
