Inhalt This seminar will provide an overview over the political dimension of Middle Eastern literature since the beginning of the 20th century. Based on an introduction which will present theoretical and methodological tools to contextualize the politics of modern Middle Eastern literature, we will turn to an empirical analysis by reading and discussing translated poems and short novel chapters. A historical approach will enable us to cover modern literary movements, such as modernism, realism, postmodernism in addition to regional genres and contextualize these in their political environments. The seminar will draw on a selection of influential novelists and poets from Arab and Turkish literature, among others Taha Husayn, Orhan Veli, Zakaria Tamer, Adalet Ağaoğlu, Orhan Pamuk and Ahmed Khaled Tawfiq.
Lernziele Students will
- be acquainted with the history of modern literature of the Middle East
- learn to employ theoretical and methodological tools to analyze literary texts.
- be able to interpret modern Middle East literature in its historical and political context.
Literatur A detailed reading list will be announced at the beginning of the seminar.
Bemerkungen The seminar will be open for 25 students maximum. Priority will be given to students of Near and Middle Eastern Studies firstly and the date of registration secondly.
