Inhalt | This course looks at the topic of Eurocentrism. In particular, the course focuses on understanding and critically examining critiques of Eurocentrism from decolonialism, postcolonialism, and ‘epistemologies of the South’. The main aim of the course is to identify, analyze and evaluate the arguments advanced in these critiques, and to consider the significance of the critiques for global knowledge production. The course addresses two broad questions. The first question is: what is Eurocentrism and what are its problems? The second question is: what are the implications of the critiques of Eurocentrism for how we think about global knowledge production? To address these questions, the course undertakes a close reading of some texts from, and on, decolonial theory, postcolonial theory and ‘epistemologies of the South’. |
Lernziele | • To introduce students to some of the key arguments against Eurocentrism, and responses to the arguments, particularly in relation to knowledge production. • To foster critical close reading of difficult texts on challenging topics. • To develop students’ abilities to identify, analyze and evaluate arguments from texts. • To encourage students to engage carefully with texts and thought from different disciplines and fields of study. |
Literatur | The course will introduce students to some canonical texts on decolonial and postcolonial critiques of Eurocentrism, but also focus on contemporary literature to present an overview of some of the ways in which the topic of Eurocentrism is discussed in various disciplines. Hence, some of readings for the course will be drawn from different disciplines and fields of study (e.g. philosophy, sociology, history, education). All mandatory literature will be uploaded on ADAM. |
