| Inhalt | Empires and nations are two fundamental forms of organizing political communities. In this seminar, we will discuss them from a social science perspective. The course is designed primarily for undergraduate students and does not require prior knowledge of the subject. We will first explore some of the defining features of empires and nation-states at a conceptual level. How do they wield power and manage their relations with other polities? How do imperial and national states legitimize their rule? And, what forms of collective identity do they engender? Based on historical surveys, we will then deepen selected aspects. These include the role of company-states in European expansion, the core characteristics of colonial rule, the way empires and nations organize space, the notion of national self-determination, and the mechanisms determining the outcomes of nation-building. Notwithstanding their many differences, empires and nations were often intertwined in historical reality. In the final part of this course, we will discuss how both political forms interacted using the examples of Great Britain, France, and Germany. |
