| Inhalt | From Sydney's Anzac Memorial, London's Cenotaph, Warsaw's Ghetto Heroes Monument, Berlin's Holocaust Memorial and New Delhi's India Gate to Lucerne's Lion Monument, Montgomery's National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park and Jerusalem's Yad Vashem, war memorials and public monuments are "sites of intense ideo-logical negotiation" (Palmer and Minogue 2010). In the wake of recent anti-racism protests, the statue of the slave trader Edward Colston was torn down and thrown into the harbour in Bristol, statues of King Leopold II have been taken down in Belgium and protests across the US have led to the removal of contentious statues and Confederate monuments. In this course and drawing on a wide variety of genres and media, we will go beyond the oft-quoted question of 'to topple or not to topple?' and explore commemorative strategies and politics, trans-national memory and cultural histories about monuments, from the Kigali Genocide Memorial and the Canadian National Vimy Memorial to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Irish Famine memorials. |
| Lernziele | Students will be introduced to the politics of commemoration and to the field of memorial studies. |
| Literatur | Students should acquire the following texts: Boubacar Boris Diop, "Murambi. The Book of Bones" (2000), Sigrid Nunez, "For Rouenna" (2001) and Jane Urquhart, "The Stone Carvers" (2001). Theoretical and additional primary texts will be made available on ADAM. |
