Inhalt This course offers hands-on training in visualization for urban research. The aim of the course is: a) to learn how to work with different mapping and visualisation software, and b) to learn how to transform raw field data into visual representations using this software. The course focuses on understanding and representing the urban environment through visual media. In the course, you will be introduced to the relevant software and gather qualitative and spatial data from field research. Through drawing, photography, audio recordings, graphics and text), you will present and transform observations as well as the impressions and ideas that they have made at urban sites of their choice.
The course is organized in a workshop format, supplemented by individual tutorials. It is designed to help students develop concrete visual representation skills in the service of urban research. To this end, the course is divided into two parts: The first part is an introduction to different forms of visual representations such as maps, plans, sections, elevation, 3D models, pictures (with metadata) as well as aerial and satellite photography and how to produce them. Students will learn to work with different mapping and visualization software (Adobe suite (Photoshop illustrator, InDesign) and Google Sketchup (3D modelling). Additional focus will be on the design process, which includes how to design visuals, diagrams, and maps from scratch to a digitalized image using these software. A second part of the course is based on practical experience through field research where the students learn to use tools and information through direct application on raw field data. Through visual observation, spatial analysis, field reconnaissance, and other means, students will be challenged to translate their observation into mensurable data and develop their senses and abilities to deduce, question, and test hypotheses about how an altering urban environment is used, experienced, valued and instrumentalized.
Lernziele - Gain practical design skills, for an introduction to key topics in urbanism, which includes digital design practice and familiarity with Adobe Suite, 3D modelling, and architectural tools.
- Present various tools and methods of visual representations. How to represent urban environments based on field observation via maps and diagrams.

Bemerkungen Unfortunately, this course is only open for students within the Critical Urbanisms Master program.
