Semester Herbstsemester 2021
Angebotsmuster Jedes Herbstsemester
Dozierende Joelle Loew (joelle.loew@unibas.ch)
Inhalt This is the first of three required proseminars in the module 'Introduction to English Linguistics'. In this course, students will learn about and practice analysing the core structural features of language. Thus, the course first considers what language and linguistics is and then introduces the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphology and approaches to syntax. The notion of linguistics as an empirically based discipline is emphasised throughout the course. Assessment of the course is by three quizzes set within the course.
Lernziele Students will develop a basic understanding of core linguistic features and terminology. The groundwork is laid for more developed study in the two following semesters.
Literatur Please buy the following text book before the first session:

Bieswanger, Markus & Becker, Annette (2017). Introduction to English Linguistics (4th ed.). Tübingen: Francke.

All additional texts will be made available on ADAM.

Teilnahmebedingungen For BA students of English
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung Please sign up for this course in MOnA.
In order to ensure a good learning environment, we aim at no more than 25 students per class (4 sections). For this reason, please also sign up in this doodle: https://doodle.com/poll/u7ufwzzfhbbefess?utm_source=poll&utm_medium=link

**You may only register TWICE: once for the class section of your best choice and once for a class that is already filled up beyond 25 people (i.e. the waiting list)**

Multiple voting (more than twice) will be removed and you will be assigned a place in a class with free seats after registration has closed. Should you have not made it into one of the courses and you are only in positions after 25 (i.e. the waiting list), we guarantee that we will take you in the course with the least student numbers. The doodle will open on August 1, 2021, 10am (CEST) and close on September 17, 2021, 2pm (CEST) in order to finalize student distribution in the week before term starts.
