62340-01 - Forschungsseminar: Corpus-based approaches to the study of pragmatics in English 4 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2021
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Daniela Landert (daniela.landert@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Corpus pragmatics is a young and exciting field of English linguistics. Recent years have seen an increase in research that uses corpora to study pragmatic phenomena, like speech acts, discourse markers and politeness. The growing number of corpora that are available to linguists provide ample opportunities for exploring pragmatic features in a variety of different settings. However, the fact that pragmatic meaning depends on context poses challenges for corpus-based studies. There is a low level of correlation between linguistic forms and pragmatic functions: a given expression does not always have the same pragmatic function, and pragmatic functions can be realised by more than one form. In this seminar, we will learn different methods and get to know tools to tackle these issues.
Lernziele At the end of the course:
- Students will be able to name, describe and apply the main theoretical concepts and methodological approaches to corpus-based approaches to the study of pragmatics in English.
- Students will be familiar with selected corpora and corpus tools for English linguistics and they will be able work with them independently.
- Students will be able to describe the main characteristics of a corpus in a meaningful way and they will be able to determine whether a given corpus can be used for a given research question.
Literatur All the compulsory readings are available in the ADAM workspace. Note: Students are expected to read the compulsory literature before the start of the seminar.
Bemerkungen This is a "Blockseminar". Students will need to prepare for the seminar by reading all of the compulsory literature before the start of the seminar. They will also have to prepare a short handout with background information on a corpus before the start of the seminar. After the first part of the course, between 8 and 13 September, students will work on a small group project and prepare a presentation, which will be presented in the second part of the seminar (13–15 September).
