| Inhalt | Modern banking has evolved over 300 years acquiring a crucial role in the functioning of the global economy. Banks solve several fundamental problems that emanate because of informational asymmetries, mismatched maturity profile of savers and consumers and contracting issues of many kinds. Therefore, banks serve the economy by providing maturity transformation, payment services, risk management and information processing through monitoring and screening. Many of these functions of the banks are being disrupted by the ongoing Fintech revolution. Fintech revolution is built on the back of technological innovation of very wide variety covering big data processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital ledger technology. Another aspect to this new development is that bank business models are challenged by already established technology companies, called Bigtech, which are entering into financial services. Using both theoretical and empirical tools, in this course, we will look deeper into the several roles that banks perform and try to understand what makes banks special. Where and how do banks bring about efficiency gains and where do they lack? We will then look at some technological innovations brought about by Fintech and understand to what extent Fintech and Bigtech will substitute banks and where they will complement them. What role regulators will play in this interaction? What it could mean for financial stability? |
| Lernziele | The course consists of lectures, group discussions, student presentations and guest lectures. Lectures discuss some key theoretical and empirical papers in banking and Fintech. Students will be assigned either academic papers or case studies for presentation that will require them to develop these ideas further. Students will also be assigned an essay topic (or be able to formulate one themselves). Essays can be theoretical or empirical in nature. Students can access an extensive database on US banks that we have collected. They can also use other data on banks and Fintech available to them publicly or through university subscription. In the middle of the semester each student will discuss their essay topic and a roadmap on how to work on their topic, with the lecturers. |

| Teilnahmebedingungen | Students enrolled in the Master of Business and Economics must have passed at least two of the following four mandatory courses of the core modules BWL and VWL of MSc in Business and Economics: Game Theory and Theory of the Firm, Econometrics, Microeconomics and Psychology of Decision Making, Macroeconomics and Finance. Students enrolled in the Master of International and Monetary Economics must have acquired at least 12 ECTS in the module Advanced Topics in Economics or Core Areas in Monetary Economics. Master students enrolled in other programs and students who do not fulfill these requirements are requested to ask for permission before enrolling. |
