| Inhalt | This seminar is designed to survey and analyze different types of Ottoman diplomatic documents during different periods of Ottoman history. The seminar provides to attendees to get acquainted with the Ottoman diplomatic documents such as minutes of peace negotiations (müzâkere mazbatası), documents of the treaties (ahidnâme or muâhede), reports of the embassy (sefâretnâme), documents of ceremonial (teşrifât), the imperial letters (nâme-i hümâyûn), documents of privileges and concessions (berât). The Ottoman diplomatic documents gained new forms with the transformation of the diplomatic institutions in the 19th century. The extracted from various diplomatic correspondences of Ottoman foreign bureaucracy, including military and commercial diplomacy, will also be scrutinized in the second part of the course. |
| Lernziele | Students will -be acquainted with Ottoman diplomatic terminology - analyze the texts through which the Ottoman Empire enacted its diplomatic relations - gain competence about different Ottoman diplomatic documentation - develop a sufficient understanding of the internal and external dynamics of the ways Ottoman diplomatic strategies |
