| Inhalt | During the course, students will learn to read and interpret philosophical work on language and key empirical research on emotion, cognition, and communication in humans and nonhuman animals. The following topics will be covered: 1. Introduction to the concept of “meaning” in key theories of language. 2. Rationality in human and nonhuman animals. 3. Basic cognitive skills in human and nonhuman animals. 4. Animal vocal communication: Mechanisms of vocal production and basic acoustic analyses. 5. Vocal emotional communication across cultures and animal species. 6. Introduction to the study of language evolution (i.e. evolution of syntax, semantics and pragmatics). Frontal lectures will be alternated with students' presentation and round table interdisciplinary discussion sessions on the issues covered during the course. |
| Lernziele | The overarching goal of this course is to develop the students’ understanding of the following scientific questions: 1. What are the core cognitive skills in humans and nonhuman animals? 2. Why are humans the only species with the ability to speak? 3. What does it mean to be a rational animal? 4. What is the role of emotional communication across species? 5. How did the human ability for language evolve? To this goal, we will work on the following methodological sub-aims: 1. Read and interpret philosophical work, connecting concepts across key theories of language. 2. Develop critical approach on empirical research on animal cognition and vocal communication. 3. Practice interdisciplinary thinking through connecting philosophical concepts and empirical findings in biology. |
