| Inhalt | Considering memory as a cultural technique, this seminar will approach monuments and memorials as literary, sculptural, and architectural texts that can be read as prescriptions for the practice of memory and as historical documents of their own erection. We will discuss both the creation and the destruction of monuments, and address the evolving practices of collective memory that they are meant to invoke, provoke, or stifle. As case studies, we will examine controversies around monuments, both old and new, and also “counter-monuments” and alternative forms of public memory proposed by artists, architects, and historians to shift the built and virtual landscape of memory. |
