Inhalt | Spoken dialogues are part of everyday life in many different forms. We engage in dialogues in spontaneous conversations with friends, in service encounters with strangers and we enjoy dialogues spoken by actors in our favourite TV series. All these settings share certain parameters: dialogues are realised as spoken language, they involve more than one participant and they are – at least to some extent – interactive. At the same time, the settings differ in some respects: some dialogues are spontaneous, while others are scripted or planned; some dialogues deal with private topics, while others do not; and some dialogues are fictional, while others are non-fictional. All these parameters can have an influence on how dialogues are realised, what linguistic forms we can find in them, and what functions these forms fulfil. In this research seminar, we will look at dialogues from different settings, including spontaneous conversations from the Santa Barbara Corpus and fictional dialogues from TV series and improvised theatre. We will explore how such dialogues can be studied and compared in a systematic manner. Students will learn the main concepts and methods from Conversation Analysis, they will become familiar with the Santa Barbara transcription conventions and they will carry out transcriptions and analyses of spoken dialogues on a small scale by themselves. |
Lernziele | At the end of the course: - Students will be able to apply the main theoretical concepts of conversation analysis to dialogic data - Students will be able to transcribe spoken language according to guidelines based on the Santa Barbara Corpus conventions - Students will be familiar with different types of spoken language data and they will be able to work with them independently - Students will be able to formulate suitable research questions for the study of spoken English dialogues and they will be able to investigate these research questions in the form of a small research project |
Literatur | Students are advised to get a copy of the following textbook (note that you should get a copy of the third edition from 2021): Liddicoat, Anthony J. 2021. "An Introduction to Conversation Analysis". Third Edition. London/New York: Continuum. The book is available in paperback and electronic versions, is reasonably priced and will be a helpful reference for your projects. If you still prefer to make copies of the book (448 pages), get in touch with the instructor. All additional readings are available in the ADAM workspace. Note: Students are expected to read the compulsory literature before the start of the seminar. |
Bemerkungen | This is a “Blockseminar”, organised in two parts. Part 1 takes place from February 1–3, Part 2 from February 15–17. Students will need to prepare for the seminar by reading all of the compulsory literature before the start of Part 1. Between the two parts, students will work on a small transcription task and they will carry out a small study, which they will present in Part 2 of the seminar. |
