Semester Herbstsemester 2022
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Kenny R. Cupers (kenny.cupers@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Emilio Distretti (emilio.distretti@unibas.ch)
Shourideh Cherie Molavi (sc.molavi@unibas.ch)
Johannes Schubert (jon.schubert@unibas.ch)
Inhalt This course focuses on research methodology and disciplinary questions and challenges for doctoral students in urban studies. The course is partly student-led and features three different formats:

Workshopping dissertation: chapters, articles, research proposals, job application dossiers, etc.
Theoretical foundations: a seminar discussion about the scholarly debate you are engaging with, and reflect on how your dissertation research can contribute to that conversation.
External guests (public event on zoom, lecture series posted): you invite a person (perhaps your secondary or third advisor) who has an important role in your work.

Each student has the opportunity to propose one of these three formats, or propose a different one that suits their needs. (We encourage those further along to opt for the workshopping one.) If you choose a theory seminar, you propose 3-4 texts (articles, chapters, or a book intro) in consultation with the course instructors, and then prepare to lead the seminar. If you choose to workshop a chapter, this needs to be circulated at least one week ahead of the class.

In addition, you may also propose an invited speaker, in groups of or two or three students. As a class, we will then organize these 4 or 5 seminars as a public zoom event. Each team takes care of the invitation of their chosen speaker. The Urban Studies division funds the events and advertises them.

The seminar aims to complement existing course offerings, particularly the Urban Matters course. While Urban Matters is a great resource in terms of career planning, applications, presenting work to peers, and addressing the various pressures of doctoral studies, this course focuses specifically on urban studies methodologies, and addresses your specific advising needs. The format will be primarily in person, with the invited guests and those unable to attend in person joining online.

Teilnahmebedingungen This course is for doctoral students in urban studies only. Doctoral students from other fields may be admitted upon request.
Spaces are limited to max. 15 students.

Please apply with kenny.cupers@unibas.ch by 1st June. Please register for this course and apply for your space. Students who were not successful in their application will be asked to de-register from this course or will be assessed as 'no show' in case a de-registration is not possible any more.
