| Inhalt | Cognitive Linguistics addresses the structure and emergence of meaning and grammar from a functionalist, usage-based perspective. In this seminar, we will go into more depth regarding issues of Cognitive Grammar and Construction Grammar to see how syntax encodes certain perspectives on an event, and how the speakers of a language conventionalize ways of expression, leading to low-level generalizations rather than “rules”. Regarding semantics, we will look at processes of meaning extension (metaphor, metonymy, polysemy). |
| Lernziele | The seminar will deepen insights from the PS “Language and the mind”, and the lecture “Usage-based models of language” by focusing on some of the key concepts and seminal articles or books. Students will learn on what evidence grammatical theories are developed, and how they help to unravel the processes that underly human cognition. |

| Hinweise zur Leistungsüberprüfung | Students write a research report on a topic of their choice (3-5pp.) and present it in the seminar. To this end, we will have sessions on using bibliogrphies as well as recent handbooks or textbooks to get a survey of the development of a research question. |
