| Inhalt | This six-week field course trains students in site-specific and collaborative urban research, directly linked to community outreach. Students will work closely with a range of urban actors and stakeholders on the ground in a particular urban setting. They will become familiar with ethnographic, architectural, and geographic research methods, such as participant observation, co-production, interviewing and oral history, visual and spatial analysis, sensory mapping, and direct action. The course places particular emphasis on questions of research ethics, the possibilities and constraints of different modes of collaborative urban research, and the relationship between empirical and theoretical work. The sites of focus for the 2023 track are Sicily (Italy) and Lamu (Kenya). In Sicily, using the notion of the Black Mediterranean, we examine the topics of infrastructural violence, neo-colonialisms and decolonial ecologies and explore proximity that exists, and has always existed, among the imagined regions known as 'Mediterranean', the 'Middle East', ‘Africa' and ‘Europe’. With this, we examine how the urban present and racialized inequalities experienced by communities in these spaces are linked to colonial legacies and regional hierarchies of power. In Lamu, our interest will be to understand how communities in this ancient Indian Ocean port city cope with rapid environmental and social transformation due to the construction of a state-mandated mega-infrastructure project, the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor project. Action research co-produced with three community organizations (the fishermen’s organization, the Lamu Youth Alliance and the Lamu Women Alliance) will include urban and environmental mapping, radio production, and documentary filmmaking. In both sites, students will examine how the urban present and racialize`d inequalities experienced by different urban constituents are linked to colonial legacies and neo-colonial realities and hierarchies of power. They will combine theory and empirical fieldwork to explore conflicts and social struggles as simultaneously processes of place-making and future-making. |

| Bemerkungen | This course takes place in Palermo (Italy/Sicily) and Lamu (Kenya). Logistics and Finance: The University of Basel provides a small grant to help cover the costs of the travel and logistics of the semester. Full details provided to students who registered for the course. Logistics: From Weeks 5-10, all site visits will be in groups, and, where needed, will be conducted using private transportation to minimize risk of infection from COVID-19. The weeks of class in Palermo and Lamu will be composed of both independent and group-based work, meaning that students will have the time and space to explore the topics of interest to them, and possibly re-visit their chosen sites, in preparation for the final presentations and public program in Week 10 in the respective cities. For all site visits, students should follow the COVID-19 regulations in place in Sicily and Kenya, and instructions from the University of Basel. Some visits will be shorter, while others may require full and long days of site exploration. For this reason, students are encouraged to stay hydrated, dress in comfortable shoes and clothing, and come prepared with note-taking tools. Costs for transportation and museum entries are covered by the program, but any additional costs are the responsibility of students. As we enter this immersion together, it is important for us all to remain open, flexible and patient as schedules and circumstances change. As such, while the schedule below is the projected plan we will aim for, the realities on the ground may require us to move around days, sites and topics. |
