67651-01 - Proseminar: Soviet Culture. From the Russian Revolution to Chornobyl 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Olena Palko (olena.palko@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This proseminar examines different aspects and manifestations of Soviet culture from the October Revolution to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. It aims to understand what Soviet culture was, who its main produces and audience were, as well as the role played by the Communist Party in defining the scope of cultural production across the Union. By looking at different examples of cultural products, such posters, paintings, films and music, we will consider how Marxism-Leninism, and other forms of ideology, influenced artistic production and the degrees of creative freedom artists actually enjoyed during the Soviet era.
The course also seeks to develop a more decentralised perspective on the Soviet past that looks beyond Moscow and St. Petersburg to understand the role culture played in Soviet nation-building and the overall process of sovietisation in the country’s non-Russian peripheries and newly annexed territories. At the same time, it will consider whether Soviet and ‘Russian’ culture should be viewed as being historically interchangeable, and to what extent different national attributes were incorporated into processes of artistic production. Finally, the course will assess what made Soviet culture attractive to many Westerners and how this was instrumentalised as a form of ‘soft power’ during the Cold War.
