67577-01 - Seminar: Language Contact (3 KP)

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Julia Landmann (julia.landmann@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt In recent years, language contact phenomena have become the focus of linguistic research. In this seminar, both theoretical aspects of language contact and a number of significant outcomes of contact involving English will be taken into account. Languages may, for instance, influence each other by the exchange of words. For example, we will look at the borrowing of vocabulary from foreign languages such as French, Spanish or German into the English lexicon; we will look at the formation of new varieties of English (“New Englishes”) and the rise of pidgins and creoles due to language contact; we will also investigate the way English has shaped other languages in its spread as a world language (Anglicisms in German, “International English”). In addition, an insight will be offered into the phenomenon of bilingualism and its societal implications.
Lernziele At the end of this seminar students
• can explain significant outcomes of language contact involving English
• can apply theoretical knowledge to empirical data
• have gained experience in conducting their own small research studies
Literatur Introductory reading: Thomason, S. G. 2001. "Language Contact. An Introduction". Washington: Georgetown University Press.
