68763-01 - Seminar: N-of-1 Design in Behavioural Research and in Psychological Interventions 1 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Dorothee Bentz (dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Theories of behaviour change and health behaviour change interventions are usually tested in con-ventional between-participant designs. However, most of these theories and interventions ultimately focus on within-participant change. This mismatch between the idiographic basis of most theories and intervention causal models and the nomothetic approach of the methodologies typically used to eval-uate them is problematic. Appreciation of this is fuelling the growing interest in N-of-1/within-participant methods in behavioural medicine, yet there is currently a shortage of opportunities to learn about with-in-participant approaches.
The workshop will be divided into four key parts: (I) presentation of N-of-1 method (design overview, theory and basic principles); (II) introduction to observational N-of-1 studies and their practical applica-tion; (III) introduction to N-of-1 RCTs and their practical application; and (IV) general elaboration of key priorities (e.g., application, personalising behavioural interventions, data analysis, limitations of the design) and advantages and disadvantages of using this method. The workshop will alternate be-tween presentations and short exercises, which will allow to understand the challenges related to this topic in a practical way.
Why shall I attend? Knowledge of how to employ N-of-1 methods enables researchers to capitalise on the recent technology development to design behavioural studies and interventions which are tailored to each individual. Using unobtrusive data capture such as wearables and smartphone sensors, com-bined with self-report Ecological Momentary Assessment data, allows us to develop truly personalised treatments. We are therefore at an opportune time to expand our use of within-person designs to better understand health behaviour and to deliver precision behaviour change interventions.

The workshops will be instructed by the behavioural scientist Dominika Kwasnicka, PhD, Senior Research Fellow in Digital Health at the Nossal Institute for Global Health, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, at the University of Melbourne, funded by the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) in Digital Technology to Transform Chronic Disease Outcomes, Australia. She is also a Senior Research Fellow, Faculty of Psychology, at SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Wroclaw, funded by the Foundation for Polish Science, Poland.

The worskshop will be held online.

Bemerkungen The workshop is offered by the doctoral program PI-PSY. PhD students who are not part of PI-PSY please apply for admission to the workshop before course registration by sending an e-mail to jens.gaab@unibas.ch (head of the program committee Prof. Dr. Jens Gaab).

Max. 20 Places will be given according to this selection criteria:
1) PhD students from the doctoral program PI-PSY
2) PhD students of other specializations of the Faculty of Psychology
3) PhD students of other faculties of the University of Basel

PI-PSY rules for withdrawal, absence, or partial course attendance:
If you cannot attend a workshop that you have signed up for, please cancel your course registration as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch. This will allow other PhD students interested in the course to move up from the waiting list. After the university’s official registra-tion period has ended, cancelled course will be assessed with NE. Course registrations can be can-celled until one week before the workshops begins. In the case of late cancellations, participants will not be considered for course registration in the next three months of the lecture periods and will be removed from the registration list of any course they have signed up during these three upcoming months of the lecture periods.

If an urgent, unforeseeable, or inevitable event before or during the course prevents a participant from attending, a written and substantiated withdrawal request that includes appropriate documenta-tion (e.g. a doctor’s note) must be submitted to dorothee.bentz@unibas.ch within two days of the workshop and without being prompted. The head of the program committee decides on the approval of the withdrawal request.
ECTS-points are awarded only for 100% course attendance.
