67963-01 - Seminar: Leveraging Social Media for Scientists 1 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Angela Leipold (angela.leipold@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Dieser Worksop wird von Prof. Dr. Sonja Utz (IWM) angeboten.

Social media are characterized by user-generated content and mass-personal communication – it is easy to reach a large audience with a single post. Communication has become much more visible, especially on platforms that do not require a login (Twitter, YouTube). This form of communication has several advantages. For example, it is easier to maintain large networks and retrieve useful knowledge. Especially during the pandemic, when many conferences were canceled or took place online, social media such as Twitter helped early career scholars to get visibility within the field. In science communication, social media have made it easier for scientists to interact with the public directly. There are, however, also downsides. Roles are blurring; messages have to be short and are displayed out of context, making misunderstandings more likely. Researchers might also feel pressured to present themselves favorably or be intimidated by the popularity indicators and the social comparisons with others.
Lernziele The goal of this workshop is to help scientists to decide which social media to use and how. We will cover a wide range of platforms ranging from platforms used by the general public (e.g., Instagram, YouTube, TikTok) over professional social network sites (e.g., Xing, LinkedIn) to platforms developed specifically for scientists (e.g., ResearchGate, Academia.eu). The current development around Twitter and potential alternatives like Mastodon will also be considered.
We will focus on four major purposes for which social media can be used: exchange and interaction with other scientists, open science, strategic self-presentation, and science communication. Within these four blocks, there will be a mix of short presentations of empirical research on the respective topic, exercises/exchange of experiences, and discussion.
Bemerkungen Dies ist ein Angebot des Doktoratsprogramms SC-PSY.

Maximale Anzahl Studierende: 15.

Auswahlkriterien bei Überbelegung:
1) Doktorierende SC-PSY
2) Masterstudierende SWE Science Track
3) Doktorierende anderer Vertiefungsrichtungen

SC-PSY rules for withdrawal, absence, or partial course attendance:

If you cannot attend a workshop that you have signed up for, please cancel your course registration as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to angela.leipold@unibas.ch. This will allow other PhD students interested in the course to move up from the waiting list. The SC-PSY strongly values fairness. After the university’s official registration period has ended, cancelled course will be assessed with NE. Course registrations can be cancelled until one week before the workshops begins. In the case of late cancellations, participants will not be considered for course registration in the next three months of the lecture periods and will be removed from the registration list of any course they have signed up during these three upcoming months of the lecture periods.

If an urgent, unforeseeable, or inevitable event before or during the workshop prevents a participant from attending, a written and substantiated withdrawal request that includes appropriate documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) must be submitted to angela.leipold@unibas.ch within two days of the workshop and without being prompted. The program director decides on the approval of the withdrawal request.

ECTS-points are awarded only for 100% course attendance.
