| Inhalt | This course is an introductory class on illegalized migration in Switzerland focusing on concepts of migration, citizenship and borders. It introduces the legal, political and economic situation of rejected asylum seekers in Switzerland and draws on practices of resistance, exclusion and belonging. We will read, exchange and discuss contemporary theories of migration to examine the following questions: What is illegalization? What can the everyday lives of rejected asylum seekers tell us about our understanding of borders and citizenship? How can we approach these concepts from an intersectional, urban, postmigrant and postcolonial perspective? Course participants will gain a general understanding of the asylum process in Switzerland. They will acquire insights into the effects of a negative asylum decision and an understanding of the complex relationship between migration, borders and citizenship. The course will also examine ethical and methodological questions about migration research and its impact on policymaking. |

Extended essays: Please note that it will not be possible to write an extended essay (Seminararbeit) for this course. |

This includes being an attentive listener and respectful discussant. We read and discuss the material of this class from a wide range of knowledge, positionalities, lived experiences and degrees of proximity to the course material. Some material covered in this class may be shocking and triggering. It is fundamental that we bear this in mind in class discussions. It is also important to be open and respectful to each other’s opinions and interpretation of texts, and – at the same time – be ready to have our ideas challenged and discussed. |
