Inhalt | Representations of Iraq's recent violent history occupy a central place in contemporary Iraqi literature. Many writers use a narrative style often referred to in literary studies as magical realism. Using texts by authors such as Sinān Anṭūn, Aḥmad as-Saʿdāwī or Ḥasan Balāsim, this seminar will examine literary representations of major historical developments, such as the 2003 Iraq War, the subsequent occupation, or the civil war against the Islamic State. Among other things, the seminar will discuss the potential of magical realism to make traumatic historical events narratable, and the role that authors can play in coming to terms with history. |
Lernziele | Upon successful completion of the seminar, students will have acquired: - an overview of major developments in contemporary Iraqi history - general knowledge of contemporary Iraqi literature - in-depth-knowledge of selected literary texts and authors - in-depth-knowledge of specific literary representations of contemporary Iraqi history - familiarity with magical realism as a common style in contemporary Iraqi literature. |
