Inhalt | In recent decades, pidgins and creoles have become increasingly important as a field of linguistic research. The focus of this seminar will be on those pidgins and creoles which are English-based (e.g. Jamaican Creole, Nigerian Pidgin, Papuan Pidgin English, etc.) and which have arisen since the fifteenth century due to the European expansion to the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. We will look at the linguistic properties of these languages, their socio-historical origins and the socio-cultural settings in which they are used today. A number of interesting questions, linguistically and culturally, will be addressed in this context, comprising the essential issue of how far the use of the different pidgins and creoles is related to concepts of ethnicity and processes of identity construction. |
Lernziele | At the end of this seminar students • are familiar with the most thriving paradigms related to pidgins and creoles • have an overview of the most essential English-based pidgins and creoles with their typical linguistic features • can explain the complex interrelationship between language use, ethnicity and identity construction |
