70368-01 - Masterprojekt: Building Trust and Being Aware of the Future: A Social Psychological Perspective 4 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2023
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Fanny Lalot (fanny.lalot@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt Building, Losing, and Restoring Trust:

Trust is a crucial aspect in all forms of relationships. It determines the satisfaction of partners in a romantic relationship, the willingness of customers to buy from a company, as well as the voting decisions of citizens and their support for their government. There is a great deal of research on how trust is formed and what the consequences of trust are for individuals. However, in comparison, much less is known about the consequences of losing trust (when trust has been betrayed) and about rebuilding trust. This Master project aims to investigate the factors that affect the building, loss, and rebuilding of trust at different levels, for example:
- At the interpersonal level: What happens when a friend or partner feels betrayed by someone close to them? What can both parties do to restore trust?
- At the organisational level: What are the consequences for a company if it loses the trust of its customers and how can it regain it?
- At the political level: What events can lead to a loss of trust in politicians (poor performance, political scandals), what are the consequences and how can political trust be restored?

Aware of the Future? The Causes and Consequences of Futures Consciousness:

People vary in how they think about, and plan towards, the future. Futures Consciousness represents individuals’ “capacity to understand, anticipate, prepare for, and embrace the future.” In previous work, we’ve shown that people with higher Futures Consciousness were more engaged and coped better during the covid-19 pandemic. We’ve also found people with higher Futures Consciousness to care more about the environment and report more eco-friendly behaviour. But many unanswered questions remain! This Master project aims to investigate new and original questions around Futures Consciousness, its causes, and its consequences. For example:
- Is Futures Consciousness related to people’s political views / political orientation?
- Does Futures Consciousness promote a vision of a rather positive future or a negative future (or both)?
- Is Futures Consciousness related to symptoms of anxiety or depression and to well-being?
- Is Futures Consciousness related to individual health behaviour (healthier habits)?
- Can short exercises or interventions momentarily increase Futures Consciousness?
Lernziele During the first two semesters, students will familiarise themselves with the topic and identify research questions from theory and practice. Preliminary (small-scale) studies will be designed and ran in collaboration, with the results being analysed and written up. This is to provide students with the opportunity to get first-hand practice on experimental research and scientific writing under close supervision, in preparation for the Master thesis. From the third semester onwards, the focus will be on preparing the Master thesis.

In addition to acquiring new knowledge, the course aims to equip students with a methodological toolbox allowing to answer many different questions in an empirically sound manner. This toolbox is of great value not only for writing one's own Master thesis, but also for later professional practice outside the university, or a scientific activity within the university.
Bemerkungen Language: The Master thesis and interaction with the thesis supervisor will be conducted in English.
