36488-01 - Kurs: Academic Writing in English II 3 KP

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2024
Angebotsmuster Jedes Frühjahrsem.
Dozierende Andrew Shields (andrew.shields@unibas.ch)
Inhalt This is the second of three required courses in the module Introduction to Academic Communication in English (ACE). The primary focus of Academic Writing in English II (AWE2) is on the use of secondary literature in academic writing; in addition, students will continue to work on the key structural components of expository writing addressed by AWE1 (thesis statements, paragraphing, transitions and developing an argument). As in AWE1 (35011), the course is conducted with input from the instructor and workshop activities in class involving individual, pair and group work. Instruction is also driven by feedback from written assignments. In this term, the content is linked to two novels by Charles Dickens ("Hard Times" and "Great Expectations" in that order); students should acquire and read the books before the semester begins.
Lernziele While further developing the academic-writing skills introduced in AWE1, students will work on the particular writing skills needed to fully engage with academic disciplines, above all how to work with secondary literature in expository writing.
Literatur A course pack of material will be provided by the instructors. Students should acquire and read the following two editions of Charles Dickens’ novels before the semester begins. Both are available from the 'Labyrinth' bookshop, Nadelberg 17 where you get a 10% discount and support an independent, local bookshop; be sure to get these editions so that page references are consistent:
- "Hard Times", by Charles Dickens, 978-0-141-19956-6
- "Great Expectations", by Charles Dickens, 978-0-141-19889-7
