The Master Seminar «Global Dimensions of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda» studies one of the cruellest crimes of the 20th centuries from an interdisciplinary perspective. In 100 days of murder, rape, and destruction, Hutu extremists in the interim government, army, militia, and the civilian population committed the crime of genocide with the goal to exterminate the Tutsi population within Rwanda. What was portrayed by contemporary media as an outburst of anarchist violence based on ancient hatred, was in fact a planned top-down genocide. Still today, the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda is treated as a local conflict that international actors merely react to or failed to react to. However, as we will see in the seminar, various trans- and international actors were involved throughout the course of the conflict. In order to understand their agencies, we have to study the historic, legal, economic, political, intellectual, social, and cultural dimensions of the crime.

No prior knowledge about Rwanda or the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi is required to register for the course. However, participants will receive reading instructions and discussion questions to prepare for the Blockseminar.
Lernziele The seminar will cover the following topics:
- History of Rwanda
- The Role of Media in Conflicts

- International Legal Frameworks
