Inhalt | This course introduces students to an in-depth analysis of financial planning and corporate management. The course serves as a framework for understanding a broad range of corporate financial decisions. The course covers topics that are important to the optimal strategic decisions-making that corporate managers can confront. Topics include financing policy/capital structure, agency issues, valuation, dividend policy, mergers and acquisitions, risk management, and real options. Students will study the following broad questions. How should a firm decide whether to invest in a new project? How much debt and equity should a firm use to financing its activities? How should a firm pay its investors? How do taxes affect a firm’s investment and financing decisions? What determines the value of a firm? The emphasis throughout the course is on the economic principles that underlie answers to these questions. It also provides the analytical tools for determining the value of a corporation and assessing the effectiveness of corporate management in maximizing the corporate values. The goal of this course is to maximize the synergy between theory and practice, providing students portable, durable and marketable tools for their careers. |

Literatur | Lecture notes: I will place the lecture notes on ADAM. -Textbook: In case you want to have a textbook, I would recommend “Corporate Finance” (by Ross, Westerfield, Jaffe, and Jordan) 13th edition. This textbook is useful as a background material throughout this course. If you are looking for additional corporate finance textbooks, there are two more textbooks; “Principles of Corporate Finance” (by Brealey, Myers, and Allen) 13th edition, and “Corporate Finance” (by Berk and DeMarzo) 5th edition. If you are looking for additional reading materials including broad topics of investment, I recommend “Financial Markets and Corporate Strategy” (by Grinblatt and Titman). If you are familiar with quantitative analyses and looking for an advanced book, you can see “Finance Theory and Corporate Policy” (by Copeland and Weston). -Further reading materials: The standard corporate finance textbooks may not cover the materials in sufficient depth for the master class. The recommended reading materials such as research papers and cases will be added for each session. |
