Inhalt | What really happens in the classroom? How exactly do teaching and learning take place? What are their varied shapes and forms? This course addresses these questions and more through a ‘naturalistic’ inquiry of classroom interaction. This means that instead of drawing on established models of classroom organization, we will use recordings and transcripts of actual, naturally occurring interactions in the classroom. The aim is to observe and describe the ordinary means by which the teacher and students make sense of each other for the various practical tasks that they encounter. In the first half of this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental structures of talk-in-interaction, such as turn-taking, repair, and sequence organization, and how they transpire distinctively in the classroom, compared to, e.g., ordinary conversation. Understanding these structures will prepare students for the second half of this course, where we will review some of the key topics in research on classroom interaction—for example, the use of technology, teaching expertise, and how the concept of learning can be respecified. This course will be concluded with deliberations on whether and how a naturalistic inquiry can inform different kinds of interventions in the classroom. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to reflect on their own expertise as interactants in the classroom, whether as students, teachers, teacher trainees, assistants, and so forth. This course welcomes anyone interested in knowing more about research on classroom interaction, especially from a naturalistic perspective using real world data. |
Lernziele | • You will be able to read, understand, and create transcripts of classroom interaction data. • You will be able to discuss some of the distinctive features of what makes an approach a ‘naturalistic’ (as opposed to a ‘positivistic’) inquiry. • You will be able to describe how classroom interaction is distinct from other forms of talk in terms of its turn-taking system, repair practices, and sequence organization. • You will be able to reflect on several key topics in research on classroom interaction and summarize at least one in terms of the major findings and/or debates surrounding it. |
