73137-01 - Seminar: Alternative Film Video Belgrade: Histories of Film Festivals, Histories of Film Forms 3 KP

Semester Herbstsemester 2024
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Inhalt This seminar will survey the history of the festival Alternative Film Video in Belgrade, one of the oldest festivals of avant-garde and alternative film and video in Europe that is still in operation. The festival was established in 1982 in Serbia during the time of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It was created to offer a meeting point and to build community among cineastes who were engaged in non-commercial, non-professional and non-traditional moving image practices. The festival was founded at Academic Film Center in Belgrade (formerly known as Academic kino club) which was part of an essential network of kino clubs throughout Yugoslavia that formed an official alternative and industrial cinema ecosystem that was at the same time non-hierarchical and self-managing.

Through a close examination of the history of this film festival we will apprehend the following: the histories of kino clubs as networks of enthusiasm and education; the politics of management and organising cultural institutions; the development of alternative film and video forms. All of these areas will be understood and contextualised primarily via the lens of film studies and cultural studies in Southeast Europe.
Greg de Cuir Jr is co-founder + artistic director of Kinopravda Institute in Belgrade. He has lectured at Hochschule der Künste Bern, Universität Zürich, Universität Mainz and many other universities. De Cuir received his MA from the School of Cinematic Arts at University of Southern California (Los Angeles) and his d.phil. from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at University of Arts Belgrade.
Lernziele Close reading and analytical skills will be sharpened in this seminar. Students will be expected to engage in discussion and will exercise their capacities for critical thinking. Short-form academic writing in the English language will also be exercised. Students will be introduced to the sub-discipline of film festival studies and also to non-traditional modes of filmmaking. Students will also gain a formative understanding of the social and cultural history of Yugoslavia.
Literatur Students may familiarise themselves in advance with Monoskop, a crowdsourced, open access, alternative online library dedicated to art and culture. Monoskop has a page of resources dedicated to Alternative Film Video which includes posters, catalogs and other publications. Links to films and videos and additional reading materials will be provided at a later date.
Bemerkungen Seminar language is English. Suitable for students with no knowledge of the languages of Southeast Europe. Many of the source texts will have translations. Most of the films and videos covered are visual experiments with very little or no dialogue.
