Inhalt | This six-week fieldwork course trains students in site-specific research and community outreach. Given the global health crisis and associated travel restrictions of the coming period, the Spring 2021 site of focus for this track will be in and around Palermo, Sicily. The city has long been admired as a space for the architectural, environmental, intellectual and political intersection of the ‘Mediterranean’ area, and embodies the social, cultural, and racialized hierarchies of colonial power and legacies that will be central to our research. While the course will remain focused on Palermo and its surrounding areas, it aims to examine its urban present through the connections and boundaries of the imagined regions known as 'Mediterranean', the 'Middle East', ‘Africa' and ‘Europe’. In doing so, our focus on site-based research seeks to interrogate the idea of a linear development of thought and considers practices in urban spaces that deterritorialize constructed and militarized concepts, notions and identities. The module looks specifically at how colonial and imperial legacies of power may relate to regional discursive formulations and global geopolitical divides. To this end, the methods we mobilize to connect our on-site research to existing community and civil society interventions on the ground include, among others, fieldwork, participant observation, visual and spatial analysis, 3D modelling and mapping. Logistics and Finance: The University of Basel provides a small grant to help cover the costs of the travel and logistics of the semester. Full details will be provided soon. |
