Inhalt | In this master seminar, students familiarize themselves with a paper in the field of public or environmental economics published in a top journal and gain practical experience with data management and analysis. The skills acquired will be useful in the context of writing the master thesis, as well as in students’ subsequent careers. The task is to replicate and extend the assigned paper. Articles will be suggested, but students are free to propose their own paper that they wish to replicate, subject to approval by Prof. Hintermann. The extension can focus on a subsample, include different explanatory variables, employ an alternative methodology and/or use additional data. The goal of the extension is to investigate the robustness of the original work and to provide additional insights. Since the focus of this seminar is empirical and involves the application of existing code associated with the chosen paper, previous knowledge of statistical software packages will be helpful. Most of the papers listed in the seminar are written in Stata (R and Python are also used, but in a distinct minority of the papers). We will support the students during the seminar, but we do not have the capacity to offer a personalized introduction to the different software packages. Please keep this in mind when signing up for the seminar. If you have absolutely no experience with statistical software packages, we suggest that you attend an introductory course at the beginning of the semester. |
