| Inhalt | The course will be taught by our guest lecturer Dr. Ana Ivasiuc Qualitative research is becoming increasingly popular in social sciences, and the methodological inventories that different disciplines mobilize in research keep diversifying: from traditional participant observation, interviewing, and case studies to digital ethnography, countermapping, drawing, performing, or photo-stories. The seminar is aimed at doctoral candidates who either have applied, or consider applying qualitative research methods in their own projects. The seminar will open a space for students to discuss their own methodological quandaries about qualitative research methods, to learn from each other, and to explore through carefully chosen readings the principles, nuts and bolts, and limitations of various qualitative research methods. We will also explore readings that offer in depth reflections about various methods, and discuss issues of reflexivity, engagement, and ethics in qualitative research. We will think about methods in a decolonial way and decenter familiar ways of knowing to privilege creative research practices liberated from rigid academic canons. In the process, we will also explore the relationship between epistemologies and methodologies. Extensive attention will be given to ethnographic research methods, including experimental ones. We will use inspiring readings (that’s right - methodology doesn’t need to be boring, scary, or dry!), but also podcasts, videos, and websites as material, and the final list of materials will be selected according to the students’ interests. An important benefit of the course is the opportunity to receive individual feedback on each research project & its methodologies. |
| Lernziele | After this seminar, the participants will be able to: • Deepen their understanding of the principles of qualitative research in social sciences • Acquire methodological tools adaptable to their own research • Understand the principles of engaged qualitative research in social sciences • Understand the principles of ethnographic research • Apply critical reflexivity to their own methodologies • Assess ethical issues related to various methods of qualitative research |
