73137-01 - Seminar: Alternative Film Video Belgrade: Histories of Film Festivals, Histories of Film Forms (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2024
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Gregory John De Cuir Jr (gregoryjohn.decuirjr@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This seminar will survey the history of the festival Alternative Film Video in Belgrade, one of the oldest festivals of avant-garde and alternative film and video in Europe that is still in operation. The festival was established in 1982 in Serbia during the time of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It was created to offer a meeting point and to build community among cineastes who were engaged in non-commercial, non-professional and non-traditional moving image practices. The festival was founded at Academic Film Center in Belgrade (formerly known as Academic kino club) which was part of an essential network of kino clubs throughout Yugoslavia that formed an official alternative and industrial cinema ecosystem that was at the same time non-hierarchical and self-managing.

Through a close examination of the history of this film festival we will apprehend the following: the histories of kino clubs as networks of enthusiasm and education; the politics of management and organising cultural institutions; the development of alternative film and video forms. All of these areas will be understood and contextualised primarily via the lens of film studies and cultural studies in Southeast Europe.
