Inhalt The course provides a comprehensive understanding of how you can drive meaningful change by developing your project and venture idea, focusing specifically on making societal change through circular economy and sustainability in entrepreneurship. This course develops your mindset and your competencies to create meaningful impact, by fostering creativity and innovation, and by enabling you to further develop projects and business ideas for greater impact. You will be empowered to develop venture ideas with the essential knowledge and skills needed for careers in startups and industry. You are welcome to join the course with or without a specific venture or project idea. Emphasis is set on active participation and learning-by-doing in a real-world context. Experienced professionals and academic experts contribute their expertise to the topics covered.

Before the Circular Startup Challenge, you will receive a recorded introductory session outlining the course format, grading criteria and the Circular Startup Challenge itself. In addition, you’ll be provided with the fundamentals of circular economy principles and entrepreneurial thinking.
The central piece of the course is the participation at the Circular Startup Challenge, in which you will build your circular startup in 54 amazing hours. Circular Startup Challenge is a three-day educational format that has already inspired over 400k people worldwide to implement their entrepreneurial ideas. You’ll explore key principles of the circular economy, such as designing for reuse, reducing waste, and creating sustainable business models. Through hands-on workshops and expert mentoring, you’ll gain practical skills in developing circular venture ideas, business plan creating, developing essential entrepreneurial skills and team building - essential tools for building ventures that align with a regenerative economy. You will connect with passionate people and experts driven to build something new and impactful.
As a follow up to the Circular Startup Challenge, you will optionally attend the Role Model Talks on Circular Economy at the University of Basel’s Innovation Garage. This will be a chance to connect with peers and engage with the local innovation ecosystem. You’ll hear firsthand from founders of existing circular startups and gain insights into their journeys as founders.
Lernziele Upon successful completion of this course, you will:
• Understand the core concepts of entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial mindset, with a focus on sustainability and circular economy principles.
• Know how to take a business idea from concept to a viable plan using modern methods and sustainable practices.
• Have developed key competencies such as teamwork, decision-making, and problem-solving in an entrepreneurial context.
• Feel inspired to drive positive societal and environmental change through your own ventures.
• Have gained hands-on experience through a hackathon or startup challenge.
• Have grown personally and professionally, and expanded your network within the innovation ecosystem.

Teilnahmevoraussetzungen This is a masters’ course with no prerequisites and is also open to bachelor students. Upon successful completion of this course, students receive 1 ECTS. Full attendance at the Circular Startup Challenge is required. Students are responsible for checking whether the ECTS of this course are credited to their study program.
Anmeldung zur Lehrveranstaltung
The number of participants is limited to 30. Interested students should email Carolina Rovira Schmitt (carolina.roviraschmitt@unibas.ch) before Sunday 6th September 2026. Please include:

1. your name, study field, degree level (Bachelor’s or Master’s), number of completed semesters, and matriculation number,
2. your knowledge/background in entrepreneurship and a short motivation statement explaining why you are interested in participating,
3. a brief description of a sustainability problem linked to circularity that you would like to solve (for inspiration, see: https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/topics/circular-economy-
introduction/overview).
4. and if you have a business idea already, give us a short description.


Please check if ECTS from this course will be accepted by your faculty.

We will select participants based on motivation and confirm participation by latest 10th September, 2026. Your registration will be entered in your Online Services only after the official deadline of the course registration period, i.e. after October 12, 2026. A deregistration is not possible and the following applies to everyone: enrollment = registration for the exam/assignment. In case of non-participation after registration it will be noted as "nicht erschienen" in the transcript.

Eucor-Students and mobility students of other Swiss Universities or the FHNW first have to register at the University of Basel BEFORE the start of the course and receive their login data by post (e-mail address of the University of Basel).
