Inhalt | The purpose of this seminar is to help students improve their critical skills in the assessment of research reports. In order to achieve this goal students will be introduced to general issues in the methodology of the social sciences bearing on such fundamental questions as the nature and status of knowledge as well as warrants for knowledge claims in the context of research. On a more practical level the seminar will discuss the formal structure of a research report emphasizing in particular such elements as theory, hypotheses, fieldwork and analysis and how they relate to one another in the researcher’s efforts to produce coherent accounts. The seminar will draw on actual research on Africa from a broad range of disciplines (sociology, social anthropology, history, etc.) to illustrate the practical elements. Participants will be encouraged to carry out an individual analysis of a report research of their own choice in the field of African studies which will also form the backbone of the course assessment. |
