Inhalt | This course will examine environmental laws and policies in a number of areas including: food and agriculture, synthetic chemicals, energy alternatives, transit and air quality, climate change, building design, ecosystem protection, emissions trading, and carbon taxes. Whenever possible comparisons will be made between EU and US policies. Students will be exposed to a variety of legal strategies to encourage environmentally responsible behavior including: prohibitive policies, cost-benefit balancing, risk ceilings, contamination limits, cap and trade programs, tax policies, labeling/warning requirements, density guidelines, land use and zoning regulation, public subsidies, green building standards, 3rd party certification, and education. Students will learn to evaluate the effectiveness of policy initiatives, and to carefully examine the quality and uncertainty of scientific evidence used to claim that a problem exists. Each session will include a 45 minute lecture followed by a discussion of presented materials and assigned readings. Students will not be responsible for all readings on the following list; students may choose among the topics and be responsible for approximately 30 pages per session. A take-home final will be given. |
