28849-01 - Seminar: The Semantics of Taste (3 KP)

Semester Herbstsemester 2011
Angebotsmuster einmalig
Dozierende Catherine Diederich (catherine.diederich@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt The main aim of this BA seminar is to investigate the relationship between perception, cognition and language, thereby concentrating on the meaning of taste-related terms. We will discuss the meaning potential of a range of lexical items and analyze in what way their meaning can be identified in usage (e.g. according to form-meaning pairings). Students will apply theoretical concepts from cognitive semantics to data (corpus data) in order to observe the meaning and polysemy of lexical items found in the field of food and taste. One aim hereby, is to discuss methodological issues when doing empirical semantics, such as collecting data and analyzing meaning both qualitatively as well as quantitatively.
Lernziele To introduce students to the relationship between language and taste perception; to apply cognitive semantic theories to taste-related terms; to examine the linguistic representation of taste from a corpus-based perspective.
Literatur All texts will be made available on ISIS.
