Inhalt | This course is organized through the ProDoc Program in Bio&Medical Ethics and is provided by the Institute of Biomedical Ethics at the University of Basel with support from the SSPH+ PhD Program in Public Health. This is a practice-oriented course that will begin with an introduction to biomedical ethics principles and research ethics that will be useful and applicable to all public health, biomedical, and nursing researchers. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn from ethical challenges that researchers face when conducting different types of studies, i.e., medical, epidemiology, molecular biology, genetics, and health education. For this to materialize, we will design the course using tandem teaching: course participants (PhD Public Health, Biomedical sciences, Molecular biology, Epidemiology, Nursing or other students) will present their research work/concepts and describe different ethical issues concerning their study design that they envision facing or may have encountered. A member of the Institute for Biomedical Ethics will ground these concerns using ethical frameworks highlighting ethical debates and providing possible suggestions. |
Lernziele | Aims of the course are to: (a) explore ethical issues in everyday public health and biomedical practices, and (b) familiarize course participants with ethical issues that researchers face in conducting public health and biomedical research. |
Literatur | Students will receive literature as attachments a month before the course begins. |
Bemerkungen | Participants must be willing to 1) present their study or research project during the course period; 2) provide their presentation information to the course facilitators a month in advance so that they can study and prepare research specific ethical concerns and suggestions. |
