Inhalt | In this seminar we will analyse the linguistics, processing and acquisition of spatial and temporal reference in English. Regarding spatial reference, the different forms of spatial deixis and their linguistic encoding will be examined. Regarding temporal reference, we will learn to distinguish the properties of tense, aspect and Aktionart (lexical aspect) and see how they interact to locate events on the time axis and to refer to their internal temporal contour. Here, the differences between the morphologically similar but semantically distinct system of German will be established. As a third domain, figurative language and conceptual metaphor will be analysed in terms of the time concepts encoded (circular/ serial) and the relationship between temporal and spatial reference (is temporal reference derived from spatial reference)? |
Lernziele | Students become familiar with linguistic approaches to semantics that range from formal to typological and cognitive. They will develop a sophisticated understanding of the factors that contribute to the interpretation of expressions that refer to space and time in English (and its contrasts to German). |
