| Inhalt | This research seminar explores health and illness from Islamic perspectives, with a particular emphasis on Islam currently practiced in African societies. Muslims live in many different countries and come from many different cultures and schools of thought. Historically, Islamic medical and other sciences drew heavily upon local medical practices as well as on the Greek tradition of Humoral theory. Islamic medicine (or Unani tibb) travelled with migrants to Africa. Islamic practitioners today vary widely in the theories and practices they employ: humoral concepts and Islamic medical concepts can be mixed with ideas drawn from witchcraft, spirit healing and biomedicine. Introductory texts providing overviews of Islamic schools of thought and ethnographic studies of health and healing in selected African societies will serve as a guide to identify common principles, diverse concerns and current debates. |
