Inhalt | We introduce the patterns and processes that are responsible for the current distribution of animals in terrestrial ecosystems. Our focus will be on historical explanations (phylogeny, distribution history) rather than on current ecological circumstances. Structure of the lecture Introduction Scientific topic Literature Global distribution patterns: faunal realms and faunal regions Basics of phylogeny and distributional history Phylogenetic reconstruction Species concepts Taxonomy, classification, phylogeny Analysis of phylogenetic relationships Spatial patterns of speciation Distributional types Speciation Radiation Intraspecific variation The history of colonization and evolutionary differentiation of island faunas Zoogeographically relevant types of marine islands Examples St. Helena and Ascension Zanzibar and Pemba Madagascar and Mascarenes Comoros and Seychelles Greenland Reconstruction of distributional history Centres of origins and centres of dispersal Phylogenetic biogeography Vicariance biogeography, cladistic biogeography Pan-biogeography Parsimony analysis of endemicity Phylogeography Conclusions and summary |

Bemerkungen | The lecture is offered for students of a Master's study in Geosciences. Advanced Bachelor-of-Science students may attend if they successfully completed the introductory lecture series “System Erde”, the basic lecture “Biogeographie und angewandte Oekologie” and basic courses in taxonomy and phylogenetics.
