| Inhalt | This proeminar will accompany the LECTURE COURSE (or vice versa) and will provide an in-depth analysis of major novels that helped shaping the South African literary and sociohistoric topographies. South African novels written in English since the 1880's to the present include Olive Schreiner's "Story of an African Farm"; Sarah Gertrude Millin, "Biography of Cecil Rhodes", "God's Stepchildren" (excerpts); Es'kia Mphalele, "Down Second Avenue", Peter Abrahams, "Mine Boy"; Nadine Gordimer, "July's People"; Zoë Wicomb, "You Can't Get Lost in Cape Town", Ivan Vladislavić, "The Restless Supermarket"; Zakes Mda, "The Heart of Redness", Njabulo Ndebele, "Rediscovery of the Ordinary: Essays on South African Literature and Culture", 1991, reissued 2006; "Fine Lines from the Box: Further Thoughts About Our Country", 2007. No prior familiarity with South African writing will be assumed. |

| Teilnahmevoraussetzungen | Old BA curriculum (2005): This course may only be taken after successful completion of the first-year module "Learning about Literature". New BA curriculum (2013): It is strongly recommended that this course is taken only after the successful completion of the "Introduction I + II: Literary Studies" proseminars. |
