33516-01 - Vorlesung: Advanced Macroeconomics: Markets with Frictions (6 KP)

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2014
Angebotsmuster Jedes Frühjahrsem.
Dozierende Gabriele Camera (gabriele.camera@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course is intended for students who are considering doing theoretical research focused on
decentralized trading environments and frictional markets. These markets are used in a wide variety of
economics fields, including labor, IO, monetary economics, the economics of payments systems, banking,
finance, game theory.
Content:
We will apply dynamic programming techniques to the study of frictional economies. The main thrust will
be the study of the allocations resulting via decentralized anonymous trade, in economies characterized by
informational asymmetries, lack of commitment and/or enforcement institutions. The center of attention
will be a class of models known as search models. The course will provide the students with the necessary
tools, technical and conceptual, to understand this area of research. We will especially consider the
following issues:
1. Existence and characterization of equilibria with random matching.
2. Existence and characterization of equilibria with directed matching.
3. Endogenous price determination by means of bargaining theory.
4. Equilibria based on decentralized punishments schemes.
5. Equilibria based on the exchange of fiat money.
Lernziele Objectives:
There are three main goals:
1. To learn several techniques used in modeling and analyzing markets with frictions;
2. To understand how to use the models independently, appreciating their strengths, while being
aware of their shortcomings.
3. To study some applications related to monetary economics, labor economics, finance as well as
social norms and cooperation.
At the end of the course students will possess a set of tools sufficient to read critically the literature and to
start independent research in the field.

Hinweise zur Prüfung Notes for the Assessment:
Your grade will be based on: (1) a midterm on 25 April (Friday) and (2) a class presentation of one paper on 20 and 21 May. All presentations are in English and must be done in a team of two persons. Each team will have 30 minutes. I will need your presentation slides before the actual presentation. You will be graded both on the form and the content of the presentation. I will assign papers to each of you unless you have some specific interests, in which case we should talk about what paper you propose to discuss. There is no required text but I will give you typed notes about what we will cover in class.
