| Inhalt | The study of ageing in the ‘Global South’ is only in its beginning. Substantial demographic and epidemiological transitions and rapid urbanization incl. migration lead soon to greying societies in these regions. What does it mean to become old and less healthy in an African, Asian or Latin American household? What are the lessons learnt from ‘Global North’ experiences? This course consists of three main thematic fields: 1. Ageing and becoming ill and frail (e.g. ageing impairments and their multiple effects; governance of chronic diseases; frailty and the weak body; biosociality of chronic illnesses; multimorbidity and health care; therapeutic itineraries; dying and death in old age) 2. Images of ageing and health (e.g. body images of ageing; global concepts of ‘active/healthy/successful ageing’; media and images of old persons; control of an ageing body: role of medication/pharmaceuticals; modification of an aged body; emerging ageism) 3. Elder care (e.g. what is elder care?; who cares: who are the caregivers in elder care?; care activities and burden of care; from living arrangement to care arrangement; older persons as care providers; new technologies in elder care; transnational elder care; care economy and care chains; institutionalized elder care; care institutions as ‘carescapes’) |
| Lernziele | Students - have gained an understanding of ageing in different cultures and contexts from a Social Science perspective; - have understood the relation of ‚becoming old and ill/frail’ and its manifold effects; - know the different images and imaginations of elder care. |
