Inhalt | This course aims to bring together recent methodological discussions in the history of political thought and study of Ottoman political concepts. For this purpose, the course starts with a brief introduction to the various approaches to study of political concepts, most notably Reinhart Koselleck's Begriffsgeschichte and Quentin Skinner's contextualism. After that, during the rest of the course the students are introduced some of the central concepts of Ottoman politics in a chronological order from early 17th century to late 19th century. Starting with concepts of politics, state, order and decline, we move onto later concepts of restoration, progress, civilization, liberty and equality. Transformation of the political concepts in these three centuries will be related to social and political transformation of the Ottoman society as well. |
Lernziele | Upon successful completion of the course students should: - be familiar with various approaches to history of political language. - have an understanding of the basic tenets of Ottoman political ideology and causes of its transformation. - recognize the semantic continuities and changes that lead to formation of modern Turkish political vocabulary. |
