| Inhalt | Marxism is a materialist interpretation of society and history, aiming at an understanding of how the material basis of a society shapes its social and the cultural superstructure. Marxist anthropology dates back to 1877 when Lewis Henry Morgan published “Ancient Society”, that is, his evolutionary model of social change. However, it became a more prominent trend in anthropology only after World War II in the mid 20th century and in the wake of decolonisation during the 1960s and 1970s. To some extent, Marxist anthropology was a reaction to the persisting exploitation of what became the Third World. It looked at the dependency of former colonial subjects in the emerging global capitalist economy and analysed the impacts of such neo-colonial relationships on the local level. Prominent themes were household economies, the position of women, the transformation of consumption, the formation of ideologies and political regimes. This seminar explores central themes in Marxist anthropology and looks at major works by Marxist anthropologists. It also looks at the impact of Marxist anthropology on general social theory and politics. Finally, it tries to answer the questions why Marxist anthropology faded out in the 1980s and 1990s. |

| Bemerkungen | All students who want to write a seminar paper should do a presentation of about 45 to 60min., followed by a discussion of 30 to 45min. It is expected that the presenters writing a seminar paper search for the relevant literature and develop a presentation that gives the other students an overview on that particular subject. Papers should be 20 to 25 pages long (12pt, 1.5 line spacing or ca 8000 words). Registration for papers is open until March 31, 2015. They are due on June 30 for those who will need the credits this semester. All others may submit their papers until the beginning of the autumn term 2015, i.e. by September 15, 2015. All papers should be submitted as word- or pdf-files via e-mail. |

| Teilnahmevoraussetzungen | Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 30 Personen beschränkt. Die Plätze werden nach Belegdatum und Studienfachzugehörigkeit vergeben. Vorrang haben die Studierenden der unter "Module" aufgelisteten Studienfächer/-gänge. |

| Hinweise zur Prüfung | All participants are expected to do a presentation on the respective subject, either based on the text available on ADAM or, preferably, on related texts. The presentation should be about 30min., followed by a discussion of 15min. A handout about the most important arguments of that text should accompany the presentation. The handout should not have more than two pages and should be made accessible on isis one week in advance (please do send it to me as a file and in time). |
