39984-01 - Seminar: Pragmatic competence in Second Language Acquisition (3 KP)

Semester Frühjahrsemester 2015
Angebotsmuster unregelmässig
Dozierende Catherine Diederich (catherine.diederich@unibas.ch, BeurteilerIn)
Inhalt This course examines the relation between acquisitional pragmatics and interlanguage communication. We will try to get an overview of the current research situation in the field of interlanguage pragmatics, which deals with the acquisition and use of pragmatic knowledge by L2 speakers. Particular attention will be given to the methodological approaches to analyze pragmatic competence in various multilingual settings and how interlanguage pragmatics can be dealt with in the foreign language classroom. Further, we will be concerned with the ways in which the use of pragmatic knowledge of L2 learners differs qualitatively and quantitatively from native speakers of the target language.
Lernziele At the end of this course students should
(a) be familiar with the research methodologies used to evaluate/measure pragmatic competence of L2 speakers
(b) have an understanding of how L2 learners acquire pragmatic competence.
On the basis of this knowledge students will be able to develop their own research questions regarding L2 speakers' pragmatic strategies in multilingual settings.
Literatur All texts will be made available on ADAM. Further readings will be made available at the seminar's library.
