Inhalt | Responsibilities between business and society Business and society are systemically interdependent, and the success and wellbeing of each will depend in part on the success and wellbeing of the other. Corporations working in a particular country must meet the expectations of their local stakeholders and therefore ought to be sensitive to the needs and expectations of a society and its culture. While there is a significant heterogeneity of different cultural mind sets between and within societies and thus the “moral common sense” is difficult to capture, even within a society, let alone between societies in a globalized world, corporations have one brand to defend and one reputation to loose. Dealing with this challenge is a “wicked problem” (Conklin, 2005). Two of the most well-established approaches to deal with some of these issues connect to corporate responsibility, corporate sustainability, and corporate philanthropy. While traditionally, corporate responsibility included economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities, the latter responsibility has separated to form corporate philanthropy, and the former three are joined by concepts derived from sustainability, notably social development and environmental protection. In contrast to corporate responsibility/sustainability, corporate philanthropy contains all voluntary actions of corporations for a public purpose. Despite the growing relevance of corporate philanthropy, its relationship to the more general issue of corporate responsibility remains unsolved. In order to shed light on the role of corporate philanthropy in general, we discuss the different roles of corporate foundations: as private (independent) foundations, as CSR instrument, and as intermediary between the profit and the nonprofit sector. |
