| Inhalt | The student collaborative project is integrated in and part of an ongoing exhibition project on the history of the former railway town Usakos, Erongo Region, in Namibia. This exhibition project consists of the production of a permanent exhibition in Usakos which is based on private collections of photographs kept by former women residents of the Usakos old location (1920s-1960s). In addition the exhibition project includes the production of a mobile version of the exhibition for temporary display at other locations. Students of the University of Basel and the University of Namibia will actively participate in mounting the permanent exhibition in Usakos and afterwards independently mounting the mobile exhibition in Basel, Switzerland. The international student collaborative project consists of three parts: - firstly, a parallel preparatory course offered at the University of Namibia and the University of Basel, - secondly, a joint research stay in Usakos in June/July 2015, - and thirdly, a joint research stay in Basel, Switzerland, in August/September 2015. I. Joint preparatory course Timeframe: February – May 2015 The coursework enables the participants to become familiar with the history of Namibia under colonial rule with a special focus on the 1950s and 1960s. The specific topics discussed comprise the history of photography in colonial Namibia with a special focus on the photographic practices inside the police zone for the relevant period, the colonial archive, urban planning and forced removals under colonial rule and especially under apartheid, urban social life in the 1950s and 1960. In addition the course aims to convey knowledge of oral history, the work with photographs, and of the ethics and techniques of conducting interviews. Last but not least students will start to reflect what a historical exhibition might be, can and cannot do. NOTE: The following activities are not part of the Übung 39673-01 (Frühjahrsemester 2015). However the participation in this Übung is compulsory for participating in these activities. II. Joint Fieldwork in Usakos Time frame for Swiss group being in Namibia: 19 June - 4 July 2015 The two groups of Namibian and Swiss students stay for approximately 10 days in Usakos and perform the following tasks: 1) To participate in the mounting of the exhibition prepared by the Usakos Exhibition Group. The mounting is scheduled inside the Usakos municipality building and will coordinated and led by the two experienced exhibition makers from Cape Town, Paul Grendon and Tina Smith. The exhibition objects are produced in Cape Town and delivered to Usakos beforehand. The students will learn the technical skills and the aesthetic considerations necessary to mount and present an exhibition. 2) To perform small studies on the history of Usakos in mixed international groups of 2-3 students. The research questions will be defined in collaboration with the lecturer and are based on exhibition material (photographs, maps, etc). The task of the groups is to collect, process, and eventually present additional information on the town’s history for a future town museum. During the stay in Usakos the student groups will start to write up their finding and think about possible ways of presentations. III. Joint Fieldwork in Basel Provisional time frame for Namibian group being in Switzerland: 22 August – 5 September 2015 The Namibian students stay for approximately 14 day in Basel, Switzerland, where they spent most of the time with their Swiss colleagues. The tasks are: The immediate goal of the fieldwork in Basel is the preparation and mounting of a mobile version of the Usakos exhibition in the exhibition hall of the Namibia Resource Centre, the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. The students, though, immediately practice what they have learnt in Usakos. They also complement the exhibition material prepared by the Usakos Exhibition Group and shipped to Basel by their own findings and consider possible additions to the exhibition for a Swiss audience. Alongside their work on the exhibition the Namibian students will get an introduction into Swiss history and presence. Fieldwork in Usakos and Basel aims to enhance students’ ability for international and intercultural cooperation and communication. |
